Updated: Jan 10

Benedictus—Adagio, B flat major, 4/4, 53 mm , r soloists and orchestra. Followed by a second Osanna, also B flat major, ¾, this Osanna only 22 measures (compared with the prior Sanctus Osanna, 27 mm)

Unknown artist. Christ's entry into Jerusalem.

Do you love the expression on the donkey's face? I wish he were mine!

Andante, B flat Major, 76 mm. 4 soloists and orchestra.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

The four solo voices gracefully continue the traditional phrases of praise begun in the preceding Sanctus.

After the Benedictus, all 54 measures, the last 4 of which are orchestral tutii, ff, with trumpets and trombones joining the strings, the choir is hopefully on its proverbial toes, ready to spring into their second, newly keyed, newly voiced Osanna.

Now, the tenors lead off, followed—always 4 measures later— by alto, soprano, and bass. Once again, the leading voice makes another entry, this time the tenors at M70, answered by soprano and alto ON the beat, M72, and the basses have the last word with a surprise quarter note "O" (instead of half note like all the other entries, M72(3). The whole scampers to another cheeky close.
